Ellis King

Ellis King is an emerging contemporary painter living and working in Norwich. Born in 1989, her work focuses on portraiture of women, and explores themes surrounding womanhood and identity – the individual and collective experience – in the 21st century.

King’s work is unique, mediating between figurative and abstract, and arrests audiences with bold strokes and colour to explore and highlight the societal construct of beauty. Paintings are a juxtaposition with bright shapes in contrast with serious expression: a protest against gender inequality.

King’s experiences as a woman are what led her to become an artist and inform the themes of her work. Her work hopes to make us see the world with a new female-led perspective and, as such, refuses to sit quietly.
