The inspiration for my paintings begins with observing the shapes and colours of everyday or unusual objects, as well as watching the changing structure of light on a beautiful view. My studio is in Dorset, but I often work plein-air on the Dorset beaches or countryside and also spend time drawing and painting further afield, in the wilder parts of Scotland, particularly the breathtaking Outer Hebrides, or the beautiful Cornish coast. I draw in charcoal then paint in oil, experimenting with colour during the planning of my paintings. My work is either abstract, or strives to capture the likeness or atmosphere of an object or place, without precision, but with the aim of emphasising light, colour and space.
